Another great meal last night. Today we continue along the Mekong towards Cambodia. The river is still incredibly wide. I am up early for a tour to a bird sanctuary. Ann pulled out, she is going to relax and do some laundry. We now have three people from our group suffering from gastro issues!
I depart from our ship at 8 am, there are five of us doing the bird sanctuary. It is about an hour’s ride by motor boat to where we get off, then another 45 minutes by coach to the sanctuary. The road is narrow through the town and of course scooters are everywhere and of course the bus has to overtake them, and every time the driver blasts his air horn to let them know he is coming or get out of the way. We eventually clear the town and nothing changes. Further on the road gets narrower, with barely enough room for cars to pass side by side! We eventually arrive safely.
We have an outboard canoe type vessel which takes through the sanctuary where most of the water is covered in floating vegetation. We see a few birds, mostly herons, egrets and cormorants. There are a lot of nests high up in the trees. After the canoe ride we have a row boat ride. It is two per boat and you sit very low down as you are rowed about. This time there are plenty of birds, it is very peaceful and serene.
We are there for about 90 mins and then it is another exciting bus ride 45 mins and 55 mins motor boat ride back to the Spirit. The time at the Sanctuary was enjoyable but the time there and back was an effort. Tonight we cross into Cambodia around 7pm
